A portaloo which came off the back of a truck and damaged a car near Cromwell.

A car trailing a truck had its windscreen smashed after a portaloo the truck was carrying fell off the back.

The incident happened on the Cromwell-Clyde Rd about 6km from Cromwell about 1.40pm.

The health and safety manager for the company transporting the portaloo, who preferred not be named, said one of three empty portaloos fell from the truck and bounced into a rental car following behind.

The windscreen was smashed but the two occupants were uninjured, she said.

The company was with the two occupants helping them with their insurance.

Police initially said faecal matter was spread across the road as a result of the incident but the company spokeswoman said the was not the case.

"The portaloos were empty. There was no faecal matter," she said.

A police spokeswoman confirmed they were incorrect with initial reports.

"There wasn't any mess that required the Fire Service to clean up," she said.

Initial reports indicated the portable toilet came off the back of the truck and hit the car behind, the spokeswoman said.

"The vehicle is damaged but the occupants seem OK."
