HSE Laboratory in Buxton, Derbyshire warned for not having proper risk assessments!

Health and Safety madness has hit an “absurd” level after the executive failed ITSELF in a check.

The Government agency’s lab in Buxton, Derbys, where all its large-scale testing is done, got a warning notice for not having a proper risk assessment in place.

The facility is now up to scratch but the embarrassing blunder was revealed in its latest report.

Lib Dem leadership contender Ed Davey said: “Talk about health and safety gone mad.

“It’s rather absurd that the Health and Safety Executive have slapped themselves with a warning notice.

“It would be comical if it wasn’t so serious.”

The report also contains the news that staff were overpaid by £269,000 in 2018/19 – although most of the cash has been clawed back now.

This week, the HSE released figures for work-related fatal injuries in 2018/19.

The data revealed 147 workers were fatally injured from April 2018 to March this year.

And while fatalities were up six on the previous year, the number has been broadly level in recent years.

The construction and agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors continue to have the largest share of fatal injuries to workers – 30 and 32 respectively in 2018/19.

HSE chair Martin Temple said: “The workplace fatality statistics are a reminder that despite the UK’s world-leading position in health and safety, we cannot become complacent.”
